brokenbench is a partnership of artists: Spiro Miralis, Sean Davey, Therese Harrison, James Alcock, Michele Mossop, Mayu Kanamori. It was set up to support personal and individual approaches to photography. Members share a strong belief that diversity within the medium is vital in stimulating and encouraging personal ways of looking at the world.
brokenbench derives its name from a photograph made in 1962 by Hungarian photographer Andre Kertesz, who made a photograph of a broken bench while visiting a family friend who had been admitted to a mental hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Kertesz's pioneering and independent style of documnetary photography has influenced many of the world's most highly regarded photographers.
