This survey exhibition showcases the work of five Italian photographers exhibiting at this year’s festival, who each bring a unique perspective of both the global and the personal and a reminder of the importance of home.
The Human Fire by Antonio Denti replicates a conversation between Denti and his 9-year-old son, Martino, after he returned from covering the catastrophic earthquake that struck Turkey. View exhibition.
“Martino said the images made him think of the primitive humans inventing fire. He had pointed to the essence.” When all collapses, we turn to fire again for protection against the cold and the abyss of despair. Around those fires, fragile and indestructible, humans begin rebuilding.
And then the winter came by Pierpaolo Mittica
On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, starting a full-scale war. When power plants were destroyed, the population was in the dark during the harsh Ukrainian winter. Over half of the country lives without electricity, water and heating, enduring temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees. View exhibition

Moldova provides sanctuary for Ukrainians displaced by war by Flavio Brancaleone
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, over half a million refugees have fled into Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest nations. Despite the hardships, Moldovans have come together to provide refugees with food, lodging, and financial aid, with many offering shelters in their homes. This photo essay portrays the refugees’ difficult journey and the Moldovan community’s admirable efforts to help during this crisis. View exhibition

Riturné (Come Back) by Mauro Curti explores the inner self by returning to one’s hometown. It captures Curti’s need to establish a new connection with his native province of Cuneo after returning for the first time in years. Curti attempts to maintain and preserve a living relationship with a past that is becoming history, freezing small fragments before they melt because everything is impermanent. View exhibition

Antonio Denti has been a video journalist for over 20 years, with a passion for still photography. He has covered conflicts in Southeast Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, including the Arab Spring and epic migration across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. He has also documented the aftermath of the deaths of both John Paul II and Queen Elizabeth II.
Flavio Brancaleone is an Italian photojournalist based in Sydney, Australia. His work is characterised by his ability to tell a story through his photos, whether covering a significant news event or capturing the beauty of everyday life.
Mauro Curti is a documentary photographer who was born in a small village in Cuneo, Italy. After several jobs, he studied photography before travelling around Central and South America for several years.
Pierpaolo Mittica is an award-winning photographer based in Italy. His work has been published and exhibited internationally across Europe, the US, China, and more.
