“In 2022, I travelled to Ukraine, an active war zone, to document the tragedy of war through photography. I wanted to show the world the struggles of the people of Ukraine.

Having decided not to compete with the major media outlets, I removed the stress of deadlines and gave myself complete control of the assignment. Having to self-fund the project was a financial strain, but one I felt was necessary.

There is no glamour or glory in war – just death, destruction, and sadness. While I have seen the worst side of humanity, I feel fortunate that my passion for the last 30 years enables me to document these stories every day.”

Gary Ramage has documented conflicts worldwide, including Somalia, Bougainville, Bosnia, Kosovo, East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan and the war in Ukraine in 2022.
