Battered wife

The term ‘battered wife’ was first coined in the 70s by American psychologist and feminist, Lenore Walker, to legally defend women who had killed their abusive husbands. It is still recognised as a syndrome resulting from sustained domestic abuse. Here ‘Battered wife’ is more than a syndrome, it’s a story. My photograph reflects on the contrast between cosmetic colours women wear to feel beautiful and the colours of violence.
